Frequently Asked Questions About Victoria Club Tread

Victoria Club Tread is one of Victoria's most active outdoor recreation clubs, founded in British Columbia as a non-profit society in 1987. Our activities include hiking, backpacking, cycling, camping, skiing/snowshoeing, walking, paddling, etc.

How can I determine the difficulty level of the events?

VCT has a scale to determine the difficulty level of each event, which is posted on each Meetup event. We use a "boot" system for hikes and a "sneaker" system for walks - both are rated 1 through 4, with 1 being the easiest. For example, "1B", "2.5B", "3B", or "2S" will be noted somewhere in the event description.

  • 1B < 5km (<200m elevation gain)
  • 2B 5-10km (2-500m elevation gain)
  • 3B 10-15km (5-750m elevation gain)
  • 4B +15km (+750m elevation gain)

If the combination of distance and elevation fall neatly within a category, the leader will decide how to rate the hike.

Am I allowed to bring a guest, or my dog?

Each event will have a notation which will state whether guests (non-members) are allowed to attend, as well as dogs. It is up to the leader's discretion to determine each. Please note our insurance policy (via the FMCBC) does not cover dog related incidents.

Does VCT offer multi-day backpacking trips?

Yes! Though very often, the leader will have to have hiked with the participant beforehand to gauge abilities and determine if the party is a good fit. The best advantage you have in being accepted on a multi-day backpacking trip is to be active with the club's day hikes and get to know the members and leaders.

How do I become a trip leader?

Actively sign up for a few day hikes to gain an understanding of the how club hikes are structured, ask questions of the leader, and if you're still interested, reach out to the trip leader/events coordinator via info@clubtread.org.

What does the $30 annual fee cover?

VCT is a registered non-profit society. The executive committee and all hike/event leaders are volunteers. The $30 annual fee covers the club's society fees, website maintenance fees and our insurance, through the Federation of Mountain Clubs of British Columbia (FMCBC).

Where are the events posted?

All events are posted on the Victoria Club Tread Meetup page. You will need to download the Meetup app on your mobile device, and/or use the Meetup website. Access will be granted to our page once your membership application has been processed. Also, VCT has a Facebook page where many of our trip reports are published. Please follow us at Victoria Club Tread Facebook.
